WESTERN RED CEDAR BENEFITS

• DURABILITY–Western red cedar is a naturally durable softwood that creates extractives (Thujaplicans and Phenolics) that ward off decay caused by insects, water infiltration, and fungi. The extractives increase with age leading to a longer lasting product life cycle–especially in exterior applications.

• DIMENSIONAL STABILITY–WRC has a very low shrinkage factor and is largely superior to all other coniferous softwoods in its resistance to warping, checking, and twisting.

• THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY–WRC’s low density gives it a high thermal insulating value because it contains a high proportion of cell cavities. In dry wood, these cavities are filled with air which is one of the best known thermal insulators. The R value is 1.35″ (34mm) of thickness.

• FIRE RESISTANCE–reSAWN’s CHARRED CEDAR has a Flame Spread Index of 40 and a Smoke Developed Index of 140 to give it a Class B Rating. CHARRED CEDAR can be fire treated to Class A for interior projects.

Located at the very end of the Overseas Highway in northern Key West, this bayside private residence included reSAWN’s NEWPORT black walnut flooring and stair treads. A cement driveway surround and raised first floor give the exterior a classic beach house aesthetic. The interior is designed around an open floor plan with living room, dining room, and kitchen in one area. With NEWPORT black walnut flooring on both the main floor and top floor, the homeowners included custom designed black walnut stair treads to connect the two floors.

The North Face is a well established outdoor sports brand under the ownership umbrella of VF Corporation. The brand joins the likes of JanSport and Timberland in VF Corporation’s “Outdoor Action Sports” section. With the company’s background and identity as an outdoor sports clothing and equipment retailer, they were inspired by the ruggedness and simplicity of nature. Architecture and design team, Rapt Studio, used reSAWN’s MERCER white oak flooring , exposed ceilings, and brick walls to convey The North Face brand.

Like most industries in the modern business landscape, the architectural and design industry is placing ever-increasing importance on sustainability. It simply isn’t enough to build or design a beautiful structure or space in 2017; it’s essential to consider the long lasting implications of every facet of the design process. With certifying bodies like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), LEED, Cradle2Cradle, Living Building Challenge, the WELL Building Standard, and numerous others, architects, designers, manufacturers, and builders are considering the well-being of building inhabitants and the conscious maintenance of natural resources with newfound diligence.

2016 brought an abundance of charred shou sugi ban, reclaimed wood, FSC certified flooring, solid, custom built furniture, and sometimes a little bit of everything. From the Longport Residence and Commonwealth Joe to Sushi Ganso and the University of Delaware, reSAWN TIMBER co. focused on consistently providing high-quality products for commercial and residential projects both large and small. reSAWN intends to provide the best possible customer experience from the sampling phase through project completion, and continues to innovate by asking, "Could we be doing this better?"

Westport, RI Residence :: HAI shou sugi ban

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Located in Harads, Sweden, The Treehotel is made up of seven treehouse rooms that are each designed based on different sources of inspiration with the main focus on reconnecting with nature. The contemporary designs by leading Scandinavian architects are simple, luxurious, and ideal spaces for vacations of mindfulness and views of the Lule River. The 7th and latest room design is 32 feet off the ground and completely covered in shou sugi ban charred cedar.
