Shou sugi ban exterior siding in hotel treehouse

Located in Harads, Sweden, The Treehotel is made up of seven treehouse rooms that are each designed based on different sources of inspiration with the main focus on reconnecting with nature. The contemporary designs by leading Scandinavian architects are simple, luxurious, and ideal spaces for vacations of mindfulness and views of the Lule River. The 7th and latest room design is 32 feet off the ground and completely covered in shou sugi ban charred cedar.

Norway based architecture firm Snøhetta oversaw the design of the 7th room, and sought to incorporate the forests into the aesthetic. In an interview with Dezeen, architect Jenny B Osuldsen said, "All the other projects are more or less suspended from the trees so we thought maybe we can make something that makes the forest more important and not the tree room that important." Additionally, the entire underside of the 7th room is covered with a life-size photograph of the treetops before the room was built.

Based on traditional Scandinavian cabins, the 7th room's exterior facade is all shou sugi ban charred cedar. The shou sugi ban style of fire finishing wood dates back hundreds of years in Scandinavian history, and Snøhetta used the charred wood for its accent to the treetops.

The charred shou sugi ban exterior siding has been used for centuries, and reSAWN has a multitude of designs that resemble the 7th room aesthetic. Leaving the shou sugi ban wood with the all black, charred layer gives the building dynamic character as the natural elements weather and change the building's look. Using traditional shou sugi ban inspirationally instead of literally, reSAWN has implemented the CHARRED process multiple wood species: cypress, reclaimed hemlock, black walnut, white oak, and Accoya (modified pine).
