The burning of Accoya® takes the incredibly durable wood and carbonizes the exterior layer, which causes the cells to resist the moisture absorption process. [MATSU](https://resawntimberco.com/product/matsu-accoya-wood-shou-sugi-ban/) is fully charred and then finished without brushing off the soft charcoal layer. This charcoal layer is a sacrificial wear layer that will flake slowly, as is expected for any natural building product, over time to reveal blackened cypress underneath with variations in color from grey to brown tones and over time more grey tones.
